Checking Criminal History in Clay County

North Carolina Official Background Checks

North Carolina does not offer an unrestricted public NCSBI name-search portal. The Criminal Information and Identification Section keeps fingerprint-supported Criminal History Record Information. A person may inspect their own North Carolina record through the NCSBI Right to Review. It is a state-only, mail-only fingerprint search, and the result is sent to the subject. Juvenile files, sealed cases, victim information, and active investigative details can also be absent from public searches for reasons unrelated to expunction.

A petition under G.S. 15A-145.5 normally carries a $175 filing fee unless indigency is approved; other categories can use different fee rules. File with the proper clerk and keep a certified order. Removal can take months as the clerk, prosecutor, SBI, and court administration complete their roles.

Clay County Felony and Misdemeanor Records

North Carolina assigns felonies to Classes A through I and misdemeanors to Classes A1 through 3. The class shown on a Clay County record does not by itself reveal the final sentence. Clay County Criminal Records by City

Hayesville is Clay County's only active incorporated municipality. It had an official 2024 population estimate of 483, while almost all county land remains outside municipal boundaries. The town provides no police department or municipal court. Clay County supplies emergency and law-enforcement services, so a Hayesville mailing address does not prove that Town Hall made the record. Confirm the arresting agency, then use the sheriff for county reports and booking facts or the clerk for the filed court case.
